Like many Americans, Joyce
found herself facing the sudden loss of a job that she had held for over
three years. As her situation become more difficult, Joyce's self-esteem plummeted and she began drinking and abusing drugs. After seeking treatment for her addiction, Joyce was referred to VGS and was placed in the Transitional Jobs Program. After completing training in the food service industry, Joyce began to seek employment with a high level of determination. Her persistence paid off and she is now employed! Florence miller came to Vocational Guidance Services without hope. She had been diagnosed with depression and health concerns revolving around a ten year injury; which affected the use of her upper neck, back, wrist and hands. While dealing with these injuries, she became desponded due to her condition and her inability to find suitable employment. "The
Maintenance Program and Mr. Nunn [her instructor] gave me the
encouragement and confidence to compete with an all male class, which in
turn prepared me to deal with an all male workforce. The hands on
training and interaction with VGS staff gave me the confidence I needed
to get back into the employment cycle." |

Lisa Doell worked as a
sewing machine operator performing a variety of jobs within the Power
Sewing Division of Vocational Guidance Services. Due to two
cerebral aneurysms and subsequent brain surgery, Lisa lost use of her
short-term memory and other functions. Because of severe emotional
distress, she has consistently battled depression, anxiety and
agoraphobia. Lisa's expertise in her field despite her limitations
was a true testament to her ability and spirit. "If it hadn't been for Tavi [Power Sewing Division Manager], his time invested, his compassion and emotional support... I wouldn't have made it." |

Within a two-year period Ed had endured three neck surgeries to correct a herniated disk and chronic neck pain. He knew that going back to work as a physical laborer was no longer and option. Ed was interested in the Information Technology (IT) field, but with no related experience, training was a necessary first step. So he made his way to the IT training program at Vocational Guidance Services after being referred to VGS by Crystal Ulery of the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation. "VGS offers excellent opportunities for people with disabilities. I gained a marketable skill and developed a positive outlook during my experience at VGS," Ed shared. "now, I'm excited for my professional future and my new job is challenging and rewarding - I learn something new every day. |
