Through our relationship with the AbilityOne Program, VGS currently holds contracts to produce 100% of the women’s dress slacks for the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. These contracts provide employment for 67 people with significant disabilities to produce high quality garments for our nation’s military.
Sewing projects have been a part of VGS since its beginning in 1890 when a group of young women formed the Sunbeam Circle to sew items for fundraising events to benefit poor, bed-bound children in Cleveland’s Lakeside Hospital. Over the years, sewing has remained a major part of VGS’ vocational skills training programs, providing training and work experience to thousands of individuals with documented disabilities who produce apparel and other textile products for local and regional retailers and manufacturers. In 1991, VGS’ Production Sewing Division was awarded its first government contract to produce dress slacks for the U.S. Army.
We also provide commercial services to a variety of businesses across the nation.
